Physikalisch- Meteorologisches Observatorium / World Radiation Center Davos (GR)

Space experiment instruments, which were built by the PMOD/WRC, have been used for measuring solar radiation in space since 1988. The PMOD/WRC is currently running an experiment on the SOHO satellite and is working on a new experiment for the International Space Station (ISS), which is currently being constructed.

Switzerland is internationally recognised as a leading centre for research, and is home to a number of institutes of world-wide importance, such as the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) and the European laboratory of the US high-tech company IBM.

General information

Switzerland’s international reputation as a research centre is beyond dispute. The high standard of universities and research institutes in Switzerland attracts many scientists from overseas.

Successful scientists

A considerable number of Nobel prizewinners have connections with Switzerland. Swiss nationals and scientists who have worked in Switzerland have won more than 20 Nobel prizes for physics, chemistry or medicine.

Space research

Switzerland is actively engaged in space exploration, with many scientists and institutes taking part in international space programmes. Switzerland has its own astronaut, Claude Nicollier, and technology produced in Switzerland has helped explore Mars and Titan.
