So Hannibal crossed the Alps with 37 elephants in hopes of intimidating the Romans. By the time his alpine adventure was behind him, he'd lost at least 26 of them (speculation). Suffice it to say, those unfortunate pachyderms perished in the icy depths (or heights) of the Alps. What happened to their corpses? 40,000 year old frozen woolly mammoths were discovered in Siberia (ironically, one of them Dima, a baby mammoth lives semi-defrosted in Lucerne)--So why not Hannibal's elephants? Isn't it speculated that his route some how included Helvetia of Old? I know, I know it's not all snow in the Alps, there's summer and winter to--but what happened to their bodies?

I welcome all speculations.

Hello Ms. Oblique,

Interesting question about Hannibal's elephants. My guess is that as the planet continues to warm (no, wait, George Bush says we have nothing to worry about -- BA!) and glaciers continue to recede, remnants of Hannibal's fallen pachyderms will surface. Whether that happens in one year or a hundred remains to be seen, but I'm willing to bet at least a few archaeologists and anthropologists are chomping at the bit. In fact, as recent discoveries of early humans found amidst melting glaciers suggest, there's probably a treasure trove of ancient life preserved in ice. It's warm and muggy in New York City today, and all this talk of ice is making me thirsty. Back to you.

¡hola 'PWB'!

Your response calls to mind the denouement of Salman Rushdie's  "Satanic Verses" where London (or Ellowen Deeowen) becomes a tropical city. That was 1988 and all we had to contend with was the ozone layer imitating swiss cheese... Was Salman Rushdie a prophet of Global Warming?

I daresay the idea of alpine glaciers melting to reveal mammoths, elephants and Carthaginians is at once fascinating and tragic: there are countless downsides for us and our planet--but to see history defrosted before our eyes, well...

well, I'd be content with reading all about in a history book, if push came to shove (and it has, hasn't it?)
