Q How do I submit my Swiss story? A Only registered Swiss Roots members can submit stories. Once you’ve chosen your member name and password,
log into Swiss Roots and go to "My Profile." Then choose "My Stories" from the menu on the left, click on
"Write a New Story," and start writing!
Q How are stories reviewed and rated by Swiss Roots editors? A All member stories are reviewed by Swiss Roots' editorial staff in the order in which they are received.
Stories are usually reviewed within 1–2 weeks. Each individual story is reviewed by only one editor. The editor
will fix errors in spelling, grammar, and sentence structure, and insert HTML formatting—such as paragraph
breaks—if necessary. Major changes are rarely made to the overall structure of the story.
Most stories will be awarded 10 SwissPoints at the time of editing; stories that are especially well-written
will receive 25 SwissPoints, at the sole discretion of Swiss Roots editors. For more information about
SwissPoints and rewards, see the SwissPoints and Rewards section of this FAQ.
Q How can I edit my stories? A Editing your stories is easy! Log into the site (or click on "My Profile") and go to "My Stories," and your
complete story list will appear. Click on "Edit" next to the story you would like to edit. You also have the
option to delete stories and add photos. Make your changes and click "Submit." Your newly edited story will be
automatically routed back to the editors for re-review.
Q If I edit a story, will it be reconsidered for SwissPoints bonuses? A Yes. If you only received 10 SwissPoints when the story was first submitted, you will be eligible for a
bonus of 15 SwissPoints by adding content or photos to your story (for a total of 25 SwissPoints). Stories
that received 25 SwissPoints when first submitted will not be eligible for a bonus.
Q Do you share or sell my stories? A We may occasionally share your stories with some of our partner sites, but your personal information will
never be shared or sold.
Q How do I upload photos to my stories? A First, make sure you're logged on to SwissRoots.org and click on "My Profile."
Open up "My Stories" from the menu on the left.
Find the story to which you want to add photos.
Click on "Photos" next to that story, under the "Options" column on the right.
Browse for the photo you want to use and click "Open," then "Upload."
Type in a brief title and caption for your photo.
Click "Save Photos" at the bottom of the page when you’re done.
Q What are the best dimensions and resolution for sizing my photos? A The best photo dimensions are approximately 400 pixels by 600 pixels. Scan your photos at a
lower resolution to keep the file size down. Photos used for the Web do not need as high a resolution as images
used in print. Seventy-two (72) dpi is optimal.
Q What is the best file size for my photos? A We recommend that you keep your photo file size to approximately 10-50k per image. If you want
to check the file size of your image, right-click on the photo to show its properties.
Q Is it acceptable to use professional photos or photos from other websites in my journals? A Only original photos taken by you should be uploaded onto SwissRoots.org. We will not accept
professional photos (unless they're your own) or photos taken from other sources (e.g., websites, postcards,
magazines, or brochures) to appear on our site. Any photo determined to have been taken from another source will
be promptly and permanently removed from SwissRoots.org. Occasionally, Swiss Roots may add stock photos to stories
that do not have member-submitted photos attached to them.
Q What are SwissPoints? A The rewards program at Swiss Roots is based on accumulating SwissPoints by writing stories and uploading
photos. When you earn enough SwissPoints, you can redeem them for gift certificates at a variety of leading
online retailers.
Q What kinds of rewards do you offer? A See our Rewards section to learn what you can earn with your SwissPoints.
Q How do I redeem SwissPoints for rewards? A Each Swiss Roots reward "costs" a certain number of SwissPoints. When you have earned enough
SwissPoints to redeem a reward, click on the reward you would like. A redemption form, product information,
and shipping details will appear. Complete the redemption form and click "Redeem."
Q How can I see how many SwissPoints I have? A Just log in or click on "My Profile" and choose "My SwissPoints" from your personal
menu on the left.
Q How often is my SwissPoints account updated? A Our editors read and rate every story submission to Swiss Roots. SwissPoints are awarded only after an
editor has reviewed, edited, and rated your entry. Photos are reviewed separately from stories.
Q How do I edit or add to my personal profile? A Simply log into your account (or, if you’re already logged in, click on the "My Profile"
link that appears in the top right corner of the page). Click on "Edit My Profile," make any changes you’d
like, and click "Submit" at the bottom of the page.
Q What if I've forgotten my member name or password? A If you’ve forgotten your member name or password, use the "Forgot Password" option listed
in the login section. Enter the email address you used to register, and we’ll email you your login information.
Q How can I change my email address, member name, or password? A You can change your email address (and keep us up to date) in your profile. To do so, log
in or just click on "My Profile," then click on "Edit My Profile." There, you’ll see an "Edit Registration
Info" link. Click on that link, change any information you’d like, and then hit "Submit Registration Now" at
the bottom of the page.
Q How do you protect my privacy? A At Swiss Roots, your privacy is extremely important to us. We invite you to read our
Terms and Conditions and
Privacy Statement for all the details.
Q What is my personal friends network, and how is it used? A Adding people to your friends network makes it easy to connect your Swiss roots and create
a personal web of Swiss family and friends. Once you add friends, they will be listed on your "My Friends
Network" page. You will receive an email any time one of your friends submits a new story, and vice versa.
Only those people within your friends network are able to see your list of friends. You'll be able to view
your friends' personal networks as well.
Q How do I add people to my friends network? A All Swiss Roots members have the option to add each other to their friends networks. To do
so, look at the member's profile and click on "Invite (member name) to join your friends network." Once that
member has confirmed your invitation, he or she will automatically be added to your network.
You can also invite non-Swiss Roots members to join your network. Simply go to "My Friends Network", click on
"Invite Friends", and enter your friends’ email addresses. As each person joins Swiss Roots, he or she will
automatically be added to your friends network.
Q What is Swiss Roots? ASwiss Roots is an image promotion project implemented by official Swiss representations in
the U.S. in 2006. Its goal is to motivate Americans with Swiss roots and Americans with affinity for
Switzerland to take an interest in Switzerland and the Swiss people. The aim of Swiss Roots is to bring
together people in the U.S. and Switzerland, to promote cultural exchanges on a personal level, and to
strengthen the understanding between the American and Swiss people.
Swiss Roots has therefore decided to create a website as a platform for communication and information, which
it will launch in March 2006. In addition, Swiss Roots is organizing a series of events in the U.S. that will
showcase Switzerland, its customs, Swiss emigration to the U.S., and Swiss culture. Swiss Roots seeks to
present Switzerland as a diverse, innovative, and modern country. Additional information about Swiss Roots
can be found in the fact sheet and the sample text.
Q Who is behind Swiss Roots? ASwiss Roots is organized by the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York and official
Swiss representations in the U.S., in cooperation with numerous local Swiss associations, under the lead of
the Consulate General in New York. Swiss Roots is supported by Switzerland’s promotional agencies, such as
Presence Switzerland, Switzerland Tourism, and Pro Helvetia. It also is supported by private sector companies
such as Swiss Helvetia Fund, Swiss International Airlines, and Swiss Post.
Q Why is Swiss Roots being financed primarily with public funds? A The promotion of Switzerland’s image is primarily a mission of the national government.
Funds from private industry can reinforce an image promotion program in a secondary manner. Private companies
are willing to make a commitment if it allows them to reach target groups that are of commercial interest to
them. In the case of Swiss Roots, private sector companies prove willing to sponsor individual events rather
than supporting the program as a whole.
Q What kind of Swiss Roots events are there? A There are three different kinds of Swiss Roots events:
Swiss Roots flagship events: These have a national focus and will be organized and marketed by Swiss
Roots, together with the partner organizations PRS, Pro Helvetia, und Switzerland Tourism (i.e., a road
show with a Swiss postal bus; the exhibit "Small Number – Big Impact," on the theme of Swiss immigration
at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum; and cultural highlights in music, film, architecture, and visual
arts in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other cities).
Regional and local Swiss Roots events: In the areas with the largest concentrations of Americans with
Swiss heritage (California, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin), events will be organized with
local partners and Swiss Roots.
Local Swiss Roots events: In places in the U.S. that have a
connection to Switzerland, events will be organized by third-party partners and will be integrated into
the program by Swiss Roots.
Q How will people from the two countries be brought together? A The primary means of communication will be the SwissRoots.org
website. It will be launched in March 2006. The website will be fully accessible in English, and some sections
will also be available in German and French. The website will include a large community forum that will allow
American and Swiss citizens to contact one another and initiate cultural exchanges.
Q Why is Swiss Roots being launched in 2006? ASwiss Roots’ goal is to promote the image of Switzerland in the U.S. and to bring together
the American and Swiss people. Relations with the U.S. are a primary focus of Swiss foreign policy.
Swiss Roots came about as part of the "Small Number – Big Impact" exhibit, which was designed for the Ellis
Island Immigration Museum by the Swiss "Verein Migrationsmuseum" and will open in the summer of 2006. The
exhibit explores Swiss emigration to the U.S. and forms a central element of the Swiss Roots program. With
this as its starting point, Swiss Roots developed into a project that encompasses the entire U.S., with the
goal of forging links between Swiss and American people.
