- The CIO can use the afore-mentioned data base to inform you whether research on any given surname or family has already been published, or whether there is known to be work in progress.
- The CIO looks up the afore-mentioned "Swiss Surname Book" to check in which communes families of any given surname hold citizenship, and since when it has been held.
- The CIO will provide hints on how to conduct research under specific circumstances.
- The CIO cannot provide time-consuming research under contract. If such research is desired, addresses of professional researchers, doing paid research under contract in a given region, can be supplied.

Requests to the Central Information Office:- Requests must be submitted with as much detail as possible: whenever known surname, given name, vital dates as well as place of citizenship should be provided; failure to provide such information will render research for ancestors much more difficult, if not impossible.
- The request must clearly indicate what additional information is wanted.
- Requests submitted by letter must be accompanied by stamps or international reply coupons to cover return postage.
Fees: - Basic information and general hints are free of charge.
- For simple requests, e.g. whether research on a given family has already been published or is known to be work in progress, there is a fee of 15 US-$.
- For more time-consuming requests, e.g. several families or detailed explanations, there is a fee varying between 20 and 40 US-$.
- If no information on a family is found in the data base there is no fee.
