The Cultural Program of Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland
Swiss Roots - Cultural Offshoots: USA 2006
Pro Helvetia offers a program of contemporary highlights in music, film and visual arts. Titled
"Swiss Roots – Cultural Offshoots" the program reveals the cosmopolitan and playful side of
Switzerland to the American public. Swiss artists today show a refreshing lack of restraint in
coming to terms with their cultural roots and using them as the basis for bold, uninhibited new
creations and interdisciplinary encounters. A delight in experimentation coupled with typically
Swiss qualities – sensible, persevering, graciously stubborn – produce an inimitable creative
mixture.
For over sixty years, Pro Helvetia has been mandated by the Swiss government to support arts and
culture within Switzerland and to promote both domestic and international cultural exchange. Its
range of activities contributes significantly to Switzerland's standing as a culturally rich,
innovative and multi-faceted nation.
What is reality and is there a truth beyond the images we create to visualize it? These and similar questions
constitute the thematic horizon of the exhibition. Reprocessing Reality, organized by Swiss curator Claudia
Spinelli, sets up a transdisciplinary dialogue between documentary film and the visual arts.

CULTURAL MAGAZINE: PASSAGES
The May 2006 issue of Passages does not simply function as a mirror for the themes
addressed in swiss roots and the Pro Helvetia cultural program. It elaborates on them
in wider-ranging, in-depth studies. Passages is not confined to the question of
immigration, nor to Swiss arts and artists in the United States.
