This data base contains the names of all Swiss immigants who arrived in the US via the Port of New York and the Ellis Island Immigration Station between 1892 and 1924. The list contains the names of roughly 110,000 immigrants. Interpreting the data is difficult, as both the family names and the places of origin in Switzerland are often misspelled. When the data base was prepared for the swiss roots project, every possible attempt was made to reconstruct the correct forms for family and place names. The search facility will show both the original Ellis Island entry and the reconstructed version. Review sponsored by swissinfo/SRI |

This data base contains the family names listed in the Swiss „Family Name Handbook“ and the communes where these names originally came from. Family names which have died out are not listed. In addition, the date at which the family obtained citizenship of the particular commune is also shown: a = before 1800; b = 1801-1900; c = after 1901. Family coats of arms, where they exist, are also shown here. Kindly provided by the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland. |

This lists all the family names of the men living in Canton Bern aged between 20 and 70 in 1798, the year of the French invasion of Switzerland. The French obliged all the men in every canton in Switzerland to sign an Oath of Allegiance to the new constitution. In the case of Canton Bern, this involved 60,137 people. The complete documents – known as the “lists of citizens” (Bürgerverzeichnisse) – include the age of each man taking the oath, his occupation, the place where his family originated (Heimatsort), and the place where he actually lived. As such, they are the equivalent of a complete census of adult males a whole generation before the census of 1835-7. The American publisher Picton press is currently preparing to publish these lists in full. |
