Film producer. Born in Basel, studied international law and worked as a journalist and author before turning to movies. His first film was the Oscar-winning documentary "The Sky Above, the Mud Below" (1961). Later in the 1960s he produced the most of the films of Vittorio De Sica. He has won five Academy Awards, a record for a producer of full-length features.
