Education pioneer, born in Glarus, immigrated in 1852. He became a teacher in Louisville, Kentucky. He became interested in early childhood education, and during a visit to Zurich discovered the ideas of the German educationalist Friedrich Froebel (1782 1852), who in turn had been inspired by the Swiss pioneer Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827). Froebel's kindergarten system emphasized on play and practical activities to help children develop and awareness of their place in the world. Hailmann introduced the system to the US, establishing his first kindergarten in 1865. He was active in promoting kindergartens elsewhere in the country and was the first chairman of the kindergarten section of the National Educational Association.
