Happy New Year & Welcome to the Future! What is the future shaped like? Award winning designer, Yves Behar, who puts a lot of thought into this, shares his ideas about innovation. Leonhard Euler, the seminal Swiss mathematician shaped the world we live in today with his theorems--from sudoku to space travel. 2007 marked the tricentennial of his birth and we spoke with astrophysicist Thomas Zurbuchen about his impact today. Petroleum shaped the progress of the 20th century and now film maker Basil Gelpke alerts us to its dark side in his filmA Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash. Zurich West used to be the industrial badlands of Switzerland's banking capital, now it's been transformed into a cultural mecca and home to innovators such as Radek Koblasa who transformed a dreary five story building into a childhood dream. Welcome to Villa Kunterbunt And where would we be without our childhood dreams? Kids all around the world are still "Thinking of Switzerland"-- and so have you! We'd like to thank all our friends--those of you who were there when we launched in 2005, and all our new friends who have joined in the fun along the way. We hope you all stick around longer for Swiss Roots 2.0-- coming soon... Stay Tuned! Ms. Helvetia

|
For almost thirty years, Fogal, Switzerland's premier hosiery and lingerie luxury brand, has been in the habit of commissioning custom shopping bags from rising and established art world denizens, like Alan Jones of the UK, Tobias Gerber from Germany or Russian design star, Erté, making the bags themselves something of a collectors item.
From pastoral to the haute urbane; light and "frou frou" to dark roving wit— we've assembled a slideshow of the naughty and the nice for your viewing pleasure...

| | | EVEN MORE INCONVENIENT: 'A CRUDE AWAKENING' | | |

“Energy is the most pressing issue. If you have clean abundant energy, you can solve all today's problems: You can turn the Sahara into a garden, you can desalinate salt water, you can pump it wherever you want to have it. Cheap energy can develop the world. A barrel of oil -- one hundred and fifty-nine liters — contains the physical capacity of what twelve men would have to work for over a year. It's really the key to our time."
This is Basil Gelpke, and that’s the optimistic part. Here’s the flip side: Our global civilization is dependent on one particular energy source, and if we run out of it we’re in trouble. That time might be soon. It might be now.

| | | EULER, ZURBUCHEN, AND YOU | | |
|
In 1735, in the city of Konigsberg, Germany, the people faced a conundrum: a river ran through the city dividing it into four separate land masses. Seven bridges were built so that people could get from one point to another, but herein lay the puzzle; was it possible to get around the city without crossing one bridge twice? It was pondered, strategies devised— laymen, aristocrats, clergy and scholars were all stymied, all except one man, the Swiss mathematician, Leonhard Euler. Euler solved the problem mathematically by envisioning points in the land masses as vertices, the bridges as arcs, in short, converting a geographical problem into a geometric equation. This penchant for looking beyond facades and pinpointing the invisible and abstract forces at work is what makes Euler’s work still relevant today. Look around you, most of the technology you are using right now is thanks to some Euler calculation: water out of your shower, your cable TV reception…

| | | LA VIDA KUNTERBUNT | | |
|
Do you recall Pippi Longstocking, the fictional heroine of many beloved children’s books and films, who had the strength of ten men and crazy red antennae plaits for hair? Pippi lived with a horse and a monkey in a crazy offbeat house called Villa Villekula—or Villa Kunterbunt— if you grew up in Switzerland (in which case Pippi becomes Pippi Långstrumpf).

The Best of Swiss Roots 2007 This was a tough call-throughout the year our members submitted their domestic, travel and sometimes mystical or lyrical anecdotes of being Swiss or second generation or traveling in Switzerland. Many of these accounts made us perk up, laugh, marvel and sometimes empathize... We've assembled a motley crew of our favorite member moments (via links): We got front row seats (well the next best thing) to the Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii via this Ironman World Champion Report. Did you know that the 6 time world champion of Ironman is from Switzerland? Read on... We were charmed to happen upon this discovery of the little-known Swiss papercutting craft Scherenschnitt. It's sort of like Swiss origami. Member, Belette, went on one such Swiss Papercutting Trip. We have a Rec+or in our midsts, and he's a funny one. All of his posts are a surefire cackling matter--but most importantly, his wit comes from his insight. We thought we'd share his Observations about Switzerland We got this Valentine's Day Story in May--but no matter, love stories are love stories, especially when they exhibit kismet It's Like DŽjˆ Vu All over Again We got another love story--this epic packed in two sets of love birds, a childhood friendship, two continents and three languages --all in one paragraph (that sort of doubles as a postcard)! We were in impressed: The Rufenacht-Letsa Story. We liked this "Lost in Translation" anecdote of a young American in Switzerland for the first time Graduate School. This evocative and haunting account of Zurich captured our imaginations Scent of My City We got a lot of travelogues and diaries this year, some of our favorites: Swiss Miss in Arizona Hiking in Switzerland: Panoramic trail Amden Lakeside Nights in Luzern There is much, much more--as you might know if you prowl the community pages. We hope to be tickled, surprised, provoked(!) and delighted by your stories in 2008
